Data Sources
Three clearly separated layers make up everything shown on WorkshopVitals.
1. Steam-sourced current metadata
Item titles, descriptions, preview images, tags, creator profiles, file timestamps and current statistics are obtained from official Steam Web APIs (Steamworks). These fields reflect what Steam reports at the time of an observation. Terminology is kept faithful to the source: current subscriptions vs lifetime subscriptions, favorites, followers, views and votes are distinct metrics and never merged or renamed.
2. WorkshopVitals historical observations
The historical layer is collected by us. Scheduled jobs store timestamped snapshots of item statistics at tiered refresh intervals. This archive — not available anywhere on Steam — powers every chart, growth figure and rank movement on the site. It begins when we first observe an item and is never backfilled.
3. WorkshopVitals derived analytics
Growth windows, velocity, acceleration, rank movement, creator aggregates, discovery pace and Momentum are computed by WorkshopVitals from layer 1 + layer 2. They are labeled as our own metrics where relevant (for example “WorkshopVitals Momentum”).
Images
Preview images and avatars are served through Steam’s official content delivery hosts via standard image optimization. If an item has no artwork we render a branded placeholder rather than a broken image.
