上海市历史博物馆曾是上海跑马厅的一栋大楼，1933年上海跑马总会拿出200万两银子，在跑马厅的西北角（今黄浦区南京西路、黄陂南路路口）建造一幢大楼，成立高级俱乐部。该建筑东面面向跑马场（今人民公园），5层钢筋混凝土结构，包括会员俱乐部和来宾看台两部分。建筑占地8900平方米，建筑面积21000平方米，髙4层，外表风格为古典主义构图，折衷主义特色。楼外立面用深咖啡色的面砖和石块交织砌筑。西边有贯通二、三层的塔什干式柱廊。西北端是高53.3米高耸的大钟楼，钟楼最上部是四面三角形坡形顶，顶与大钟之间是瞭望台。钟楼
