螈是一种奇特的幼态持续两栖动物。它们一生都保持在幼年形态，即便发育至成体并具备繁殖能力，也终生生活在水中且保留标志性的羽状外鳃。在极少数极端环境或受激素刺激的情况下，如长期脱水，受到过大压力，或者碘摄入过量，螈可能会经历变态发育：脱去外鳃、鳍状尾消失，肺部发育完善爬上陆地。然而，变态会严重缩短其寿命，降低其再生能力。
